What is water rescue equipment?
This range is aimed at all emergency services to allow a safe rescue of casualties in water based scenarios – This can be the Fire and Rescue Service, Police, Coastguard, HART Teams and many others. This can involve situations involving flood water, slow moving water in lakes, rivers and canals and finally, white water scenarios for fast flowing rivers and underground caves. The primary purpose is to ensure that the rescuer remains safe and this then allows a successful rescue in any of the above scenarios. Any rescuer using such equipment will be trained by specialist training companies and will be constantly practicing safe us to be ready when called upon.
The range comprises of the following:
- Drysuits - Specialist drysuits with reinforced panels to prevent rips and tears during use. Sometimes they can include the boots attached and are often worn with a separate fleece bodysuit for warmth
- Personal Floatation Devices - PFDs are primarily designed to assist a conscious person by providing more buoyancy to help them stay afloat in water. They provide between 60 and 90N of buoyancy and allow easy movement where the assumption is that the wearer will be able to swim to safety.
- Life jackets - They will provide between 150 and 275N of buoyancy and they will support an unconscious wearer and make them positioned face up in the water. Once inflated, either automatically or manually, they are very cumbersome so more intended as emergency protection.
- Water rescue helmets - A multi-role technical EN 14052:2005 rescue helmet is designed to work in the most demanding work environments and allows the easy fitment of various accessories such as visors, ear defenders, lighting etc.
- Water safety boots - Robust boots with non-snagging fastening systems and good water drainage so give both grip and ankle support where it is likely the wearer will not see the surface of the riverbeds or flooded areas.
- Water safety gloves - Neoprene gloves are worn to keep hands warm once wet and works like a wetsuit where the thin water layer between the skin and glove warms up. Gloves have a combination of styles and all have added grip on the palms which is vital when wet.
- Accessories - Knives are essential to quickly cut tangled lines and clothing. They will have blunt noses to prevent accidental injury and are used to cut rather than stab. Waterproof torches for helmets and hand use are needed as part of the standard rescue team equipment. Ropes and throw lines Floating rope with reflective yarns allow safe use in the dark. Throw lines must be easily packed into weighted bags that allow easy packing and water drainage.
