There are many different types of lanyard, with the main industrial versions fitting into 3 categories: Work Restraint, Fall Arrest and Work Positioning. A work restraint lanyard is designed to restrain the user so that they cannot get into a position where they can take a fall. If there is any possibility of a fall, then a fall arrest lanyard should be used.

Fall arrest lanyards are equipped with a shock absorbing section which will limit the force exerted on the user during a fall. In UK, EN355 requires energy absorbers to have a minimum tensile strength of 15kN and to limit the maximum impact force to 6kN. Work Restraint becomes Work Positioning the moment when the user of the lanyard start to rely on the lanyard to maintain their work position.

When using fall arrest lanyards, attention should be made to the distance below the anchor point and the ground, to ensure there is enough clearance for the lanyard to successfully, and if necessary, fully deploy, before any part of the user makes contact with the ground.
